2016 Toyota Tundra vs 2016 Ram 1500

Shopping for a workhorse truck can be a daunting task. Substantial research can help make this decision easier. This will eventually lead to looking at the 2016 Toyota Tundra vs the 2016 Ram 1500. These two vehicles have become staples of the pickup truck class. Both offer impressive performance capabilities.

The two trucks take different approaches with their base engine offerings. Toyota equips the 2016 Tundra with a powerful 4.6-liter V8 engine, while Ram decides to go with a smaller 3.6-liter V6. The Tundra’s larger standard engine allows the truck to best the Ram 1500 in the horsepower category, 310 to 305. When looking at a workhorse truck, a higher horsepower number means better performance capabilities.

In addition to the base 4.6-liter engine, the Tundra can be equipped with an available 5.7-liter V8 that pushes the horsepower up to 381.

2016 Toyota Tundra Standard Features

The 2016 Toyota Tundra includes more standard safety and technology features than the 2016 Ram 1500. Every base Tundra model comes equipped with a standard rearview camera, a feature that is not standard on the Ram 1500. In addition to the standard rearview camera, the Tundra can be equipped with a blind-spot warning system, rear cross-traffic alerts and parking sensors. In government safety testing, the Tundra earned a four-star overall score.

Toyota offers more standard technology features on the 2016 Tundra than Ram does on the 1500. The base Tundra SR trim comes equipped with a 6.1-inch Entune touchscreen infotainment system. Ram does not offer an infotainment system on the base 1500 models. Toyota’s great Entune system is supported by a six-speaker sound system and offers connectivity via Bluetooth, USB and auxiliary. In addition to the Entune system, base Tundra models come equipped with keyless entry, heated mirrors, a windshield wiper de-icer and a dampened tailgate.

Higher Tundra trims continue to add to this list of features. Additional options include:

  • 7-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • HD radio
  • Upgraded suspension systems
  • Off-road tires
  • Moveable tie-down cleats
  • Leather upholstery
  • Automatic dual-zone climate control
  • Heated and ventilated seats
  • 12-speaker JBL sound system
  • Skid plates
  • Tow hooks

The 2016 Toyota Tundra is a rugged and capable workhorse truck, but that doesn’t mean it is lacking in comfort. At the end of the day, the Tundra offers features and capabilities that cannot be matched by other trucks currently on the market.
